George Harrison’s Aston Martin DB5 goes under the hammer

An Aston Martin DB5 owned by George Harrison went under the hammer this week as part of a 36-car auction worth more than £6 million.

The cars, along with a huge collection of movie posters, were sold at the COYS True Greats auction at the Royal Horticultural Halls.

“There are some extremely interesting cars on offer which could be the ultimate Christmas present,” managing director of COYS Chris Routledge told Sell my Aston Martin.  “The classic car market is one that is still buoyant and many people are looking at cars as an investment that is also fun.”

The DB5/1896/R was manufactured in late 1964 and supplied new on January 1st 1965 to the Liverpudlian through Brydor Cars of Brooklands.

Painted in Platinum silver with a black Connolly leather interior, it has several enhancements chosen by Harrison, including chrome wire wheels with Avon tyres, 3-ear hub cabs, a heated rear screen, Britax safety belts and a detachable passenger headrest.

In the 1980s it was displayed at a museum in Tokyo and in 1995 the car was purchased by a Japanese collector resident in Germany, Sell my Aston Martin has been told.

It has been kept in a largely original and unrestored condition and has a mileage of just over 22,000 miles. The engine starts and runs well.

The provenance is confirmed by a letter from Aston Martin and the history file includes a copy of the original build sheet.

“We are delighted to offer for sale George Harrison’s first “important” car, bought new and delivered to him personally in 1965 at his Kinfauns estate in Esher, Surrey,” Mr Routledge told the Sell my Aston Martin team.

“We are offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire not only one of the most collectible of the David Brown Aston Martins
produced, in very original condition, but one that has been owned by arguably one of the most influential musicians ever to grace the earth.”
