Aston Martin Vantage GTE takes Le Mans podium on debut

Aston Martin Racing’s new Vantage GTE achieved a podium finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans last weekend.

In its debut, the number 97 V8 racer finished third in the GTE Pro category. It covered some 332 laps – almost 3,000 miles – of the 8.5-mile Circuit de la Sarthe without technical hitch.

“Le Mans is always one of the most special events of the year and probably the world’s greatest motor race,” said David Richards, chairman of Aston Martin.

“To come here with a new GTE car and finish on the podium is a great accolade not just for the team, but also for the Aston Martin product and everybody that has supported us.”

Two of the team’s drivers, Stefan Mucke and Adrian Fernandez, had never competed in a GTE car at Le Mans, and they were joined by Darren Turner, who has been with the outfit since the start of the Aston Martin Racing programme.

Adrian had the honour of driving the Vantage GTE over the finishing line, rounding off an historic occasion for Aston Martin.

The car set the fastest GTE lap of the race, and although it went the distance with no problems, fuel economy was not up to the same standard as the winning car.

“Everyone in the team should be very proud of themselves,” Mr Richards added.

The Gulf-liveried Vantage GTE started the race from second on the GTE Pro grid, having been competitive in the three qualifying sessions. Come the race, the rain dried up and first behind the wheel was Mucke, who passed the pole-sitter on the first lap to take the lead.

Much wheel-to-wheel action then followed, with Turner battling for the lead. As he handed over to Fernandez the team were in third, then a safety car period slowed down the action for more than an hour.

Despite slipping to sixth, the team battled on overnight as the cooler air altered track conditions. The Vantage GTE climbed back up the leader board and held second position in the early morning.

A crash set the team back slightly and the race continued with Fernandez holding third place. In the final stages Mucke set the fastest time and brought the car home in third.
